Tne users for the present will be the same projects as for the 'earlybird' service. For reference, these projects are: Project Code PI ------------------------------------------------------------- y001 Patrick Briddon y002 Neil Sandham y003 Ken Taylor y004 Jonathan Tennyson y005 Tim Hender y006 David Price y007 Lois Steenman-Clark Users will be sharing the system with benchmarking, testing and validation work, so the service is definitely "as is". On occasions it may be necessary to close the system to users. Our apologies in advance for any problems. How to register for the new service ----------------------------------- A reminder: you have to be registered for two things: the admin website, and the service machine itself. You are already registered for the admin website. Go to the admin website here: https://www.hpcx.ac.uk/index.jsp Login using your email address and your password for the admin website. If you have forgotten your password for the admin website, enter your email address only and click 'login'. It will refuse your login, but an 'Email' button will appear. Click on this and it will email a new admin website password to you. When you have logged into the admin website, click the "Request New Account" button. Now you will be asked for your Project Code (see the table above) and Project Password. You can get the Project Password from your PI or Project Manager. Enter also the username you would like, and click "Submit". In due course, once your PI or Project Manager has activated your registration and the account has been created, the website will email you. You can then login to the admin website again to pick up your password for the service machine itself. For PIs or Project Managers --------------------------- Your users will need to know the project password in order to register. If you've forgotten this, or you want to change it, log into the admin website (see above) and then click the "Administer" button. Now click "Update". This will show you the project password, and you can change it if you wish. When a user has registered, you will need to activate their registration. Only after you have done this will their account be created. To approve registrations, click "Administer", and then "Administer Users". This will bring up a page where you can select users and click on an "Activate" button. For the present we would like to ask you to restrict the number of users to two per project. If this will present a problem for you, please get in touch by mailing to support@hpcx.ac.uk How to login to the service --------------------------- 1: Use ssh to connect to the service, like this (assuming you're using a Unix machine): ssh -l myname login.hpcx.ac.uk ...where 'myname' is your username 2: The first time you do this it will give you a warning message about an unknown host key, and ask you if you want to continue. Answer 'yes'. 3: Then you will see a security banner, and ask you for your password. Enter your password for the service machine (not your admin website password). You should now be logged in. For security reasons, it's a good idea to change your password at this point (see below). How to change your password on the service machine -------------------------------------------------- The problem with this is that your password has to be changed on all the login nodes. For this reason, you have to use a special password server to do this. 1: Go to the password server by typing: passwd 2: You will then see the following messages Logging you into the password server to change your password The authenticity of host 'hpcx-passwd.hpcx.ac.uk (193.62.122.24)' can't be established. RSA key fingerprint is fe:98:14:bb:64:b7:1f:2a:e4:08:43:89:2f:49:14:fe. Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? 3: Answer 'yes'. Now it will say: Warning: Permanently added 'hpcx-passwd.hpcx.ac.uk' (RSA) to the list of known hosts. ######################### W A R N I N G ########################### This is a private computer facility. Access for any reason must be specifically authorised by the owner. Unless you are so authorised, your continued access and any other use may expose you to criminal and/or civil proceedings. ################################################################### myname@hpcx-passwd.hpcx.ac.uk's password: 4: Enter your initial service machine password. Now it will say: ********************************************************************* You are only permitted access to this machine to change your password. ********************************************************************* Changing password for "myname" pwalmsle's Old password: ENTER YOUR INITIAL PASSWORD HERE pwalmsle's New password: ENTER YOUR NEW PASSWORD HERE Enter the new password again: ENTER YOUR NEW PASSWORD HERE ********************************************************************* Password successfully changed. Password will take up to 5 minutes to propagate to the rest of the HPCX sy stem ********************************************************************* Logging out of password server and returning to login server Connection to hpcx-passwd.hpcx.ac.uk closed. Note that there is no way for the admin website to know that you have changed your password on the serivce machine. So if you look up your service machine password there again, you will find that it has not changed. If you forget your new password, at present you will have to send in a query; later, a way of requesting a new password through the admin website will be provided. 5: Your new password will then be propagated to the login servers within five minutes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- USING THE EARLY-USE SYSTEM A few points which you should bear in mind when using te early-use system. 1: LoadLeveller job command files must specify a class with a line such as: #@ class = par64_12 Available classes are: parX_Y, where X is the number of 8-way LPARs (allowed values are 1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128), and Y the wallclock time in hours (allowed values are 1,6,12). There are also serial_Y classes for sequential jobs (again Y is wallclock time; allowed values 1,6,12). 2: llcancel does not work at present. If you need to cancel a job, please submit a query including the jobid to be cancelled. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- COURSES On 28th November we shall be running a course, "Introduction to the HPCx Service". The course will provide an overview of HPCx, and will cover topics such as compilation, execution, batch job submission, tools and libraries. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to request and receive consultancy on their own specific codes. The course will be held in the EPCC training room in Edinburgh and is free and open to all HPCx users. In addition places are available on a range of courses in High Performance Computing, taking place at EPCC in October and November. Full details of these courses are available here: http://www.epcc.ed.ac.uk/computing/training/timetable/ If you would like to attend either the Introduction to the HPCx Service course, or any of the other courses please use this form to apply: http://www.epcc.ed.ac.uk/computing/training/courses/form1.html Places will probably be short, so please apply now. **PLEASE NOTE: 28 November is one of the days scheduled for a strike of **firefighters, and it seems likely that if this happens, Edinburgh **Airport may be closed for all flights. For this reason is may be better **to make other travel arrangements, or stay in Edinburgh. Here is a list **of hotels and guesthouses not far from the Kings Buildings campus. ** ** http://www.epcc.ed.ac.uk/contact_us/accommodation/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Regards --John ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Earlier mailings: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/support/notices/index.html -- John Fisher j.fisher@epcc.ed.ac.uk HPCx User Administration and Helpdesk HPCx: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk Helpdesk: support@hpcx.ac.uk Phone: +44 131 650 5029 Fax: +44 131 650 6555
