An AU is defined as the amount of computation done by a 1 Gflops processor in an hour, as measured by the Rmax value of the Linpack benchmark. The information about how much time a job has used comes to the accounting software in processor-hours, and is then converted into AUs. During the changeover period and while the new platform was in trial, it was decided to make this conversion using the factor we used on Phase 1. However, Phase 2 has now been accepted by EPSRC as being fully operational. That means that Phase 2 of the HPCx project has now officially started. Accordingly, we will change to the new conversion rate on Monday, 21 June. The new conversion rate is based on the benchmark tests we ran during the implementation trials. They gave Phase 2 a rating of 6,188 Gflops; in other words, it will provide 6,188 AUs per hour. As it has 1600 processors, this means: 1 CPU hour = 3.8675 AUs 1 AU = 0.2586 processor hours ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HPCx ANNUAL SEMINAR The second HPCx Annual Seminar, "New Science from Capability Computing", will take place in Edinburgh on Friday, 9th July. On the day before, Thursday, 10th July, there will a buffet/wine reception (sponsored by IBM) in the Talbot Rice Gallery, as well as a run of the "Improved Performance Scaling" course, and the a meeting of the HPCx user group. For the programme, further details and a registration form please see: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/about/events/annual2004/ Registration is free to all academics and researchers. This is a good time of year for a weekend in Edinburgh, and a chance to meet HPCx staff, as well as other users. We look forward to seeing you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Regards --John ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Earlier mailings: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/support/notices/index.html To be removed from the mailing list: log into your website account, go to the "Update" page, and click the "Opt out of user emails" field; then click "Commit update". -- John Fisher j.fisher@epcc.ed.ac.uk HPCx User Administration and Helpdesk HPCx: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk Helpdesk: support@hpcx.ac.uk Phone: +44 131 650 5029 Fax: +44 131 650 6555
