People are ** ** only admitted to the RAL site if their identities are known in ** ** advance. ** Thursday Nov 25: Optimisation Techniques for the Power4 Processor This course will focus on tools and techniques for single processor optimisation on HPCx. The course will cover the architecture of the processors and memory system, profiling and hardware counter tools, getting the best from the compilers and Power4-specific tips and tricks. There will be hands-on sessions in addition to lecture material. We recommended that participants also attend the Performance Scaling course which will be held on the following day. Friday Nov 26: Improved Performance Scaling on HPCx This course will describe tools and techniques for improving the parallel scaling of applications on HPCx. The course will cover performance analysis tools, communication optimisation, decomposition techniques, parallel I/O, and mixed mode programming. There will be hands-on sessions in addition to lecture material. We recommended that participants also attend the Optimisation Techniques course which will be held on the previous day. To register for these courses, please use the standard form. http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/support/training/form.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WEB SITE INTERRUPTION During the scheduled maintenance session next Wednesday 24 November we will need to take down the machine which hosts the HPCx server, as well as our database, the helpdesk and some other functions. This means that the HPCx website will be off the air from midday until mid afternoon. Our apologies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 15th MACHINE EVALUATION WORKSHOP CCLRC Daresbury Laboratory, 8-10 December, 2004 This annual event devoted to distributed high performance scientific computing has now become a crucial meeting-places between the research community, especially in the areas of Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Materials Science, and the major vendors of workstations, software and peripherals. Among those attending will be many members of the HPCx team, both from Daresbury and from Edinburgh. Registrations for this year's MEW, the 15th in the series, are now open. For more information, including how to get to Daresbury, and a link to the registration form, please go here: http://www.cse.clrc.ac.uk/disco/mew15.shtml ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OPENGL There are two versions of the OpenGL graphics library available on HPCx. They are: - The native AIX version - The portable Mesa implementation Note that the native implementation is much faster, but depending on the capabilities of your local terminal you may not be able to use it. This is why we also supply Mesa, which should work in all situations. For more information about these, please see the entry in the FAQ: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/support/FAQ/index.html#opengl ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Regards --John ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Earlier mailings: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/support/notices/index.html To be removed from the mailing list: log into your website account, go to the "Update" page, and click the "Opt out of user emails" field; then click "Commit update". -- John Fisher j.fisher@epcc.ed.ac.uk HPCx User Administration and Helpdesk HPCx: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk Helpdesk: support@hpcx.ac.uk Phone: +44 131 650 5029 Fax: +44 131 650 6555
