For that reason, the service is configured to favour jobs that use a large proportion of the system. To complement this, we provide assistance from the HPCx Terascaling Team for users who wish to take advantage of the full power of the system by ensuring that their applications scale effectively. An important part of this capability strategy is the capability incentives scheme. By this, users who run codes which have been certified to scale well will be charged fewer AUs than they actually use. The full scheme is described here: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/services/policies/capability.html A code can be awarded a "Seal of Approval" at bronze, silver or gold level, depending on the number of processors on which it scales well. Those at the gold level can get a discount of 30% - so this is well worth looking into. A number of codes already have Seals of Approval: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/services/policies/starcodes.html If you have a code which you think might be a candidate for this, please contact the helpdesk initially: support@hpcx.ac.uk ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WARNING: NETWORK INTERRUPTION Maintenance on the JANET network will affect connections to HPCx on Tuesday, 7th December. Several interruptions in the network are expected between 7:00 and 9:00 in the morning. Our apologies for the late notice - we have only just heard of this ourselves. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 15th MACHINE EVALUATION WORKSHOP CCLRC Daresbury Laboratory, 8-10 December, 2004 This annual event devoted to distributed high performance scientific computing has now become a crucial meeting-places between the research community, especially in the areas of Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Materials Science, and the major vendors of workstations, software and peripherals. Among those attending will be many members of the HPCx team, both from Daresbury and from Edinburgh. Registrations for this year's MEW, the 15th in the series, are now open. For more information, including how to get to Daresbury, and a link to the registration form, please go here: http://www.cse.clrc.ac.uk/disco/mew15.shtml ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SIESTA We now have version of SIESTA 1.3f1 installed on HPCx. People who wish to use it should contact the helpdesk. Please note that every user must hold a licence from the developers in their own name, and we can explain how to apply for one of these. The executable includes the optimisised diagonaliser described in the HPCx technical report "Improved parallel performance of SIESTA for the HPCx Phase2 system", by Joachim Hein.
