In preparation for this, we will shortly be starting registrations through the website for the projects which have been authorised for access. Of course, some of these projects are already using the early-use service, but the new full-service projects will be distinct from the existing early-use ones. Your early-use accounts, however, will continue for a short while, so that you can transfer files etc to your new accounts. At present, an account on the HPCx system can only be a mmember of one project (this restriction will be removed later). This means that to use the full service, you will need a new account with a new username. However, we understand that most users would prefer to keep the usernames which they are using for the early-use service. To get round this, we are going to change all the usernames of people in projects y001 to y007, according to the following rule: The username will be preceded by a 'x'. If the resulting username is nine characters long, it willl be truncated to eight characters. Thus, 'fred' will become 'xfred', and 'jennifer' will become 'xjennife'. In all other respects, including the password, the accounts will be unchanged. You will then be able to register for the full service using your favourite username. Projects z001, z002 and z003 are not affected. We will start to make these changes at 10:00 tomorrow morning, 6 December. They will take a few minutes to complete. I shall mail again tomorrow with more details about the start of the full service.
