For those who aren't familiar with it: it enables a user to become another user without logging off. The problems about it are: - You can only do this by using the password of the other user - You end up using the other user's account Both of these are against the HPCx Terms and Conditions: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/services/policies/tandc.html This is because they have serious security implications. There are, of course, perfectly good reasons for wanting to use "su", but we have to adopt procedures which preserve the system's security. It's in the nature of such things that they are occasionally a nuisance, but in this case we think it's worth it. We'd be grateful, therefore, if people would not use "su". If you have problems with moving or sharing files between accounts, please mail the helpdesk and we will help. support@hpcx.ac.uk ---------------------------------------------------------------------- USER GROUP MEETING On 20 July, 2005, we will be holding a meeting of the HPCx User Group. The is will take place over the Access Grid, and will start with two short presentations: David Henty: Task farms. Using task farms on HPCx is a topic which several people have enquired about recently. David will be discussing techniques, and pros and cons. Ian Bush: xlf ver 9 Ian will be discussing the Fortran 2000 features in the new release of xlf. There will also be a chance for you to raise any concerns you may have, and to give us your opinions and suggestions. Senior members of HPCx staff, including the systems group, will take part. Here is a list of Access Grid nodes in the UK - there are probably many more by now: http://euroag.accessgrid.org/eurosites.html#uk We shall use the "University of Edinburgh (EPCC)" venue at the AGSC venue server (www.agsc.ja.net). If you'r planning to take part, it would help if you would drop me an email, indicating which Access Grid node you're planning to use. j.fisher@epcc.ed.ac.uk ---------------------------------------------------------------------- COURSES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS School of Mechanical Engineering University of Leeds July 26 - 29, 2005 As usual, the courses are free for all academics based in the UK. Everyone is welcome - but places are limited, and it's first come first served. **Using the HPCx Service **Tuesday 26 July 2005 This course provides an overview of the HPCx service, and covers topics such as compilation, execution, batch job submission, tools and libraries. There is also an opportunity for attendees to request and receive consultancy on their own specific codes. **Message-Passing Programming with MPI **Wednesday-Friday, 27-29 July, 2005 The world's largest supercomputers are used almost exclusively to run applications which are parallelised using Message Passing. The course covers all the basic knowledge required to write parallel programs using this programming model, and is directly applicable to almost every parallel computer architecture. This course uses the de facto standard for message passing, the Message Passing Interface (MPI). For more information on these course, please go here: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/support/training/index.html To register, please go here: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/support/training/form.html The course will take place in the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds. To find the location of the School, please go to this map: http://tldynamic.leeds.ac.uk/leisure/alphabet.asp ...and enter "Mechanical Engineering" in the "search" box. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Regards --John ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Earlier mailings: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/support/notices/index.html To be removed from the mailing list: log into your website account, go to the "Update" page, and click the "Opt out of user emails" field; then click "Commit update". -- John Fisher j.fisher@epcc.ed.ac.uk HPCx User Administration and Helpdesk HPCx: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk Helpdesk: support@hpcx.ac.uk Phone: +44 131 650 5029 Fax: +44 131 650 6555
