The is will take place over the Access Grid, and will start with two short presentations: David Henty: Task farms. Using task farms on HPCx is a topic which several people have enquired about recently. David will be discussing techniques, and pros and cons. Ian Bush: xlf ver 9 Ian will be discussing the Fortran 2000 features in the new release of xlf - see below. There will also be a chance for you to raise any concerns you may have, and to give us your opinions and suggestions. Senior members of HPCx staff, including the systems group, will take part. Here is a list of Access Grid nodes in the UK: http://www.agsc.ja.net/QAtesting/QApasses.php We shall use the "University of Edinburgh (EPCC)" venue at the AGSC venue server (www.agsc.ja.net). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VERSION 9 OF xlf Version 9 of xlf is now available as a Non-Default Installation (NDI). This means by default you will continue to use the old compiler and its run-time libraries, etc, but the new version is available if required (see the next section). The idea is that people should now try it out and discover any compatibility problems, etc. If no serious problems emerge, the current plan is for version 9 to become the default on 28 September, 2005; if you could let us know of any problems with the new version well before that date, that would be very helpful. Thereafter the current version will still be available as an NDI. Ian Bush will be discussing the features of the new version at the User Group meeting on 20 July (see above). If you have any concerns about this, please bring them to the meeting, or mail to the helpdesk (support@hpcx.ac.uk). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- USE OF THE NDI xlf xlf 9 is now available as a Non-Default Installation (NDI) on HPCx. The base install directory is /usr/local/Fortran/9.1 which contains the "usr" and "etc" directory trees with the relevant libraries and executables. (Putting in in /usr/local makes it available on all LPARs.) So to invoke the compiler you do this: /usr/local/Fortran/9.1/usr/bin/ All the standard xlf variants are available plus mpxlf and mpxlf90. The NDI compiler configures to code so that the NDI run-time libraries are called rather than the default libraries. There is also a check tool in the same bin directory which can be used to find out if your compiled code calls more than one version of the run-time libraries. You can call it like this: usr/local/Fortran/9.1/usr/bin/checkForMultipleRuntimes a.out There is an IBM web page explaining the issues of having multiple run-time libraries: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21106880 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Regards --John ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Earlier mailings: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/support/notices/index.html To be removed from the mailing list: log into your website account, go to the "Update" page, and click the "Opt out of user emails" go to the "Update" page, and click the "Opt out of user emails" field; then click "Commit update". -- John Fisher j.fisher@epcc.ed.ac.uk HPCx User Administration and Helpdesk HPCx: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk Helpdesk: support@hpcx.ac.uk Phone: +44 131 650 5029 Fax: +44 131 650 6555
