---------------------------------------------------------------------- H H PPP CCC UK NATIONAL HPC SERVICE H H P P C C -------------------------- HHHHH PPP C x x EPCC and CCLRC Daresbury H H P C C xx Laboratory are members of H H P CCC x x the HPC-UK partnership ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HPCx User Mailing 086 24 November 2005 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Contents ** Migration to Phase 2A ** Phase 2A: A few more notes ** Events, November - December 2005 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Greetings-- MIGRATION TO PHASE 2A HPCx is currently moving to the new Phase 2A platform, so the service is down. Unless something unexpected happens, the service will reopen on the new platform at 10:00 am tomorrow, Friday 25 November. All the current disks will be transferred to the new platform, so your files will be in the same places as before. The IP addresses of the new service will remain the same. You will still ssh to login.hpcx.ac.uk and your passwords and ssh keys will be unchanged. Please note however: any jobs that you had waiting to run when the Phase 2 service closed have been lost - you will have to submit them again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PHASE 2A: A FEW MORE NOTES In my last mailing (084, 16 November) I gave some information about the new system. Here are a few extra points, to go with that. As I said then, the new Phase 2A system has a Linpack Rmax rating of 7.395 Tflops. It therefore provides 7,395 AUs per hour on its 1536 CPUs. This compares to 6,188 AUs per hour from the 1600 CPUs of the old Phase 2 system. (For the definition of the AU, see http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/services/policies/charging_model.html) As a result, we will be changing the relationship between AUs and CPU hours: there will now be 4.81445 AUs to the CPU hour. A new version of the User Guide is now available: see: HTML: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/support/documentation/UserGuide/HPCxuser/HPCxuser.html PDF: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/support/documentation/UserGuide/HPCxuser.pdf Postscript: http://www.hpcx.ac.uk/support/documentation/UserGuide/HPCxuser.ps In my last mail, I said that the minimum number of CPUs which will be allocated to a job is 32. This is not right. The minumum is in fact 16 CPUs, which is one LPAR. Charging will be in 16-CPU units; for example, if you ask for 17 CPUs, you will be charged for 32; if you ask for 33, for will be charged for 48, and so on. The basic jobscript which is recommended for most parallel batch jobs has not changed - see the User Guide, under "Batch Processing". However, you will require a change for jobs which use only one LPAR, that is, up to 16 processors. For these, you should remove the following line in your script: #@ network.MPI = csss, shared,US If you keep that line, you will get an error message when you submit the job. Please see the User Guide for a discussion of this. Despite the changes in the system, scripts for parallel interactive jobs need not be changed. The maximum number of CPUs available is still 32, and you should still specify the inter32_1 job class. There will be a one-day course on optimisation for the Power5 processor at Daresbury Laboratory on Thursday, 8 December. The course will cover the new architecture and optimisation techniques (especially differences from the earlier Power4 architecture), and will also present initial results on the new system.
