The ISF's website says: Understandably, we can't experiment on the weather to study climate change, nor can we travel thousands of light years to watch two galaxies collide. Instead we use supercomputers, the most powerful calculating machines ever invented. Hear how computer simulations are performed, then see pictures and watch movies of fantastic experiments possible for the first time in history. What do supercomputers actually look like? How are they built? And how much more will the supercomputers of tomorrow be able to do? For much more, and a link to the booking form, please see here: http://www.epcc.ed.ac.uk/news/sciencefestival_2006/ I saw David's dry-run of this talk, and it's really good. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HECToR: EPSRC PRESS RELEASE "£52 million boost for next generation High End Computer Science and Innovation Minister, Lord Sainsbury, has announced a £52 million investment in the next generation High End Computing service, HECToR. HECToR (High-End Computing Terascale Resource), a high performance computer, will provide UK scientists with the means to undertake increasingly complex computational simulations across a range of scientific disciplines including climatology, earth sciences, particle physics, cosmology, astrophysics, chemistry, materials, fluid dynamics, atomic and molecular physics, plasma physics, and nanoscience..." "...This service, called HECToR, is due to start in 2007 and is expected to have an initial capability equivalent to 50-100 peak TFlop..." As members of the HPC-UK consortium, the HPCx and CSAR services are collaborating to run a one-day workshop to provide training on the differences between the two systems and hands-on help in porting codes. The course tutors will be experienced members of the CSAR and HPCx staff.
